Insomnia

Are you struggling to fall asleep, stay asleep, or fall back asleep after waking up? If so, you might be dealing with insomnia, the most prevalent sleep disorder in the United States. Each year, it affects up to 40 million Americans. While insomnia can impact individuals of all ages, it is particularly common among women and older adults.

Sleep is essential for the proper functioning of nearly every system in our bodies. Without sufficient, restful sleep, you may be at a higher risk for developing conditions such as hypertension, obesity, depression, and anxiety, among others.

TYPES OF INSOMNIA

Acute insomnia occurs suddenly and lasts from one night to a few weeks, often triggered by specific circumstances like an important or stressful event.

Chronic insomnia, on the other hand, involves difficulty falling asleep, staying asleep, or returning to sleep at least three nights per week for a duration of three months or more.

There are also two categories of insomnia: primary and secondary. Primary insomnia is not associated with any other health condition, while secondary insomnia results from another condition such as asthma, depression, arthritis, cancer, heartburn, pain, medication, or substance use.

TREATMENT

At Supreme Health & Wellness, we can help you achieve a restful night’s sleep. We will work with you to understand your medical history and lifestyle habits that may be affecting your sleep. Treatment varies depending on the cause of your insomnia. If your insomnia is linked to an underlying health condition, treating that condition may resolve your sleep issues. We may also recommend behavioral changes, medication, therapy, and other health practices to improve your chances of getting a good night’s rest.
