Mental Health Medication Management
Medication management in Miami.
Psychiatric medication, prescribed carefully and followed closely: a full evaluation before anything is started, GeneSight testing when indicated, and follow-up visits every one to three months, in English or Spanish.
What medication management means here.
Medication management is the ongoing work of choosing a psychiatric medication, starting it at the right dose, watching how you respond, and adjusting until it does its job with the fewest side effects. At Supreme Health & Wellness, the prescription is never the whole plan. Every visit includes practical coping strategies, and when weekly therapy would help, we coordinate with a trusted psychologist so there is one team around you.
Dr. Alberto Oyaga is a board-certified psychiatric nurse practitioner with a doctorate in nursing practice. He evaluates, diagnoses, prescribes, and manages psychiatric medication for adults and adolescents, in person next to Jackson South Medical Center and by telehealth across Florida, in English and Spanish.
How it works.
- 01
Evaluation first
The first visit is a full psychiatric evaluation, whether or not you are already taking something: your history, health, sleep, stress, and what has been tried before. Medication decisions are made with the complete picture, not from a symptom checklist.
- 02
Choosing carefully
If medication makes sense, we choose it together, with a plain explanation of what it does, what the first weeks usually feel like, and what the alternatives are. When indicated, GeneSight genetic testing shows how your body is likely to process specific medications before a change is made.
- 03
Starting, and checking in
Most psychiatric medications take several weeks to show their full effect, and the early weeks are when questions and side effects come up. There is more support at the start, and more space once you are stable.
- 04
Follow-ups every one to three months
Ongoing visits track how you are doing, adjust doses, and keep the plan current as life changes. Follow-ups can be in person in Miami or by video anywhere in Florida.
- 05
Reassessing, when you are ready
Stability first. Then, when it makes sense, we look at whether you can do well with less. Starting a medication is not a lifetime commitment; it is a decision that gets revisited with you.
Already on medication?
If you have moved to Miami, are changing providers, or your prescriber is no longer available, the first visit is still a full evaluation. Bring your current medication list and any records you have. Decisions about continuing, adjusting, or changing what you take are made with the full picture, and explained in plain language.
What we manage medication for.
Medication management is part of care for most of the conditions we treat. Each page explains how we approach that condition specifically.
Common questions
Is medication management the same as seeing a psychiatrist?
It is the core of what any psychiatric prescriber does. Dr. Oyaga is a board-certified psychiatric nurse practitioner with a doctorate in nursing practice; psychiatric nurse practitioners evaluate, diagnose, prescribe, and manage the same conditions psychiatrists treat, to the full scope of that license in Florida. Visits here also include coping strategies, not only a prescription review.
How often are medication management visits?
Usually every one to three months, depending on how you are doing: more support early on and after any change, more space once you are stable. Visits can be in person in Miami or by video anywhere in Florida.
Do you take insurance for medication management?
Yes. Psychiatric care, including medication management, is insurance-based here; accepted plans include Blue Cross Blue Shield, Humana, CarePlus, Oscar, and more. Contact the office to confirm your specific plan.
What is GeneSight, and do I need it?
GeneSight is a genetic test, done with a cheek swab, that shows how your body is likely to process certain psychiatric medications. It does not say which medication will work; it helps narrow choices and doses. It is used when indicated, for example after a medication has not worked or has caused side effects, not for everyone.
Will I have to take medication forever?
Not necessarily. Some people use medication for a season and taper off with guidance; others do best staying on it long term. The plan is reassessed at follow-ups, and reducing or stopping is always done together and gradually, never on your own.
Can medication management be done by telehealth?
Yes. Video visits are available across Florida, and many patients do the first evaluation in person and follow-ups by video. Some situations call for an in-person visit; that is a clinical decision made with you.
